My Go-To Remedies During Pregnancy for Colds, Cough, and The Flu

When you discover you’re expecting you also discover that there’s quite a long list of “Dont’s” to strictly steer clear of. One of the items on top of that list is medicationunless prescribed by your OB-GYN, it’s really best to steer clear from any kind of medication. Do not self-medicate with the usual over the counter medicines! 

This post is about natural alternatives for medication you would normally take when you have a cold, a cough, or the flu. I swear by these remedies because they really worked for me in place of paracetamol, decongestants, and throat lozenges! (I actually continued with this regimen even after giving birth, and even until now that I’m on my second pregnancy!)

To all expecting moms out there who feel like they’re coming down with a cold, cough, or the flu, here are the details for my go-to remedies!

Albeit it may take a little more time to recover, just take it as your body naturally getting the rest it really needs as you continue making a baby while fighting of the virus/bacterial infection.

Do keep in mind that first and foremost, REST is priority. Take all the rest you can. Sleep is your body’s natural way of healing. The more sleep you get, the faster you will recover. Next, drink plenty of WATER! The normal daily water intake for an expectant mom is 2 liters of water but whenever I’m down with something I up my intake to 3 liters – this helps flush everything out including the bug you caught.

Now on to the list:

1. Two Tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in a 250ml glass of water 

Personally, I believe this to be an amazing immunity booster. When sick, our bodies become more acidic. ACV is the only vinegar that is alkaline-forming to the body unlike all other vinegars like white, balsamic, etc. I know it’s surprising right? But it really does wonders.

Take it at least twice a day, once in the morning before your first meal, and another at night before your bedtime or at least 2 hours after dinner.

2. A clove (or two) of Fresh Garlic – with or without honey

Now there are two kinds of remedies that involve fresh cloves of garlic. Why? Garlic has natural antibacterial AND antiviral properties! I’ve been using this as my magic go-to pill for whenever I think I’ve caught a bug and it really really helps big time! (sorry in advance to all the husbands who have to bear with the garlic-breath! but your wife will really benefit from this haha)

  • A clove of fresh garlic WITH a tbsp of honey can be taken when you have an itchy throat which has not developed into a full-on cough yet. Do not drink water at least 30 mins after to allow the honey to do it’s job. Anyway, honey is still a type of sugar and sugar can make things worse if you already have a bad cough! BUT it does wonders for when you’ve just started having that itchy throat sensation. Honey has natural antibacterial properties as well so it can help soothe an itchy throat while fighting of the bacteria.

Take this without water at least twice a day, once in the morning before breakfast (after ACV), and before bedtime. Take it as you would take your paracetamol if you have a very bad cold and or a fever.

  • A clove of fresh garlic WITHOUT the honey is taken when your itchy throat has progressed to a full-on bothersome cough. In addition, if you’ve been taking the garlic+honey mixture for 3 days and your itchy throat is still there, stop taking the garlic with honey and I’d suggest increase your water intake instead.

Take this with water (as you would a tablet of paracetamol) at least twice a day, once in the morning before breakfast (after ACV), and before bedtime. Take it as you would take your paracetamol if you have very bad flu symptoms and or a fever. – I got the flu during my first pregnancy and I thought I could recover with just the extra sleep… but I realized my body needed a little help by midday… so I took this every 4 hours for the rest of the day… and the next day, my symptoms had greatly improved! 3. REAL Ginger Tea with a squeeze of lemon – with or without honey

I explicitly typed “real” because this is the old-fashioned ginger tea where you just boil A LOT of ginger in water. Boil for a good amount of time until you get the maximum spice you can handle. Please do not buy ginger tea at the grocery or anywhere else… really, just make your own… that way you can make sure you’re only getting the good stuff and nothing artificial.

If you prefer your ginger tea with honey, I’d suggest keeping it at 1 table spoon per 250ml glass. Stir in your honey every time you’ll drink one glass to manage the ratio. Again, honey can make matters worse for you if you take too much.

Anwyay, this works as a wonderful soothing mixture if you need something to warm your body and help you get through all the symptoms, especially the coughing. It can also help you sleep better too!

**** Please be aware that turmeric or yellow ginger should not be ingested by expectant moms! There are numerous articles online which debate the consumption of turmeric… so I’d advise that it might be best to steer clear of it, especially since it has been proven to induce uterine contractions.
